In a multi-room house or even multi-story, you wouldn’t want to control your entire house HVAC system with just one thermostat. As heat rises and cool air sinks, the upstairs or downstairs of your home will be different temperatures from each other. If your home only has one floor, your HVAC system has the potential to create hot or cold spots throughout various rooms of your home. A zoned system works great to solve these issues to provide your entire house with a consistent, energy-efficient system.

Different areas of your house have different heating and cooling needs, so why control your whole house and system with just one thermostat? The thermostat picks up on the temperature of the area around it therefore heating or cooling the entire house to one specific area. Your home might have windows that have direct sunlight, naturally heating your home. Areas of the home covered by shade that a tree provides will be cooler; a zoned heating and cooling system will compensate for these areas of your home to provide a consistent temperature around the house.

When You Should Get a Zoned HVAC System

  • More than one floor
  • Large areas with vaulted ceilings, lofts or atriums
  • Room off the garage
  • Finished rooms in the attic or basement

How It Works

Dampers are placed throughout the ductwork of the home, they are electronically controlled to provide precise temperature for the whole house. Dampers control the flow of heated and cooled air through the system. To further advance zoned heating and cooling, thermostats are located in each zone of the house for more accurate readings.

When an area of your home needs heated or conditioned air, the thermostat will signal to the dampers to release more or less air. Once an room or area has reached the correct temperature dampers located in that area will close, sending the air to other parts of the house.

Benefits

Even Temperature Distribution

A zoned system will allow your home to be at the right temperature no matter where you are in the house. Dampers specialized for your house will be placed in the ductwork to direct hot or cooled air to specific areas. Once a room gets to the right temperature based on the zone’s thermostat, the dampers will shut off in that zone. Other dampers in the ductwork will continue to work until the correct temperature is reached.

Various Resident Preferences

When you have a family of five or six people it can be difficult to cater to everyone’s comfort needs. With a zoned HVAC system it is easier than you would think to satisfy everyone in the family. This allows for family to change the temperature in their room or area without affecting the rest of the house or other household member.

Energy-Efficient

Since a zoned temperature control system uses dampers to regulate the amount of air flow in the system, extra energy isn’t being used to heat or cool air that is not needed throughout the entire house. The dampers will turn off in specific zones once the target temperature is reached in that zone, while other zones continue to get conditioned air.
